Here’s Why Your Referrals Program is Struggling

In a recent study conducted by Aptitude Research, founder Madeline Laurano surveyed over 300 Talent Acquisition leaders and found that 84% believe employee referrals are the most cost-effective way to find talent.  However, she also noted that most struggle to get their program to deliver consistent results, here’s why:

  • They are not integrated into a broader talent strategy or existing technology. Far too often companies design referrals in isolation, and they’re launched and left alone.

  • They’re not communicated in a way that is simple and intuitive. Communication is the most significant challenge with referrals programs – employees simply don’t have enough information or can’t easily access and share jobs.

  • They are not automated. Technology is a beautiful thing when applied effectively, and in the case of referrals it can amplify human connection to create accessibility and efficiency.

  • They lack employee participation. Most companies know the potential referrals have to drive hiring outcomes, but struggle with adoption – program managers need to think far beyond launch, and continually engage their employees and networks.
